Build your own Bread Oven – (Workshop 4) 8/09/18
Join Rachel Helms of Hale Ways for this 5-day hands-on workshop (each consecutive Saturday) to learn how to use natural materials to make a traditional cob oven in your own garden or community space: the oven is the kind found in many resilient cultures around the world!
Such an oven, made from locally sourced materials, enhances the flavour and social value of good food and strengthens community bonds. Spend time with others working collaboratively to create a something to last for a generation!

5 days workshops:
|Saturday Workshop Programme
ages 14 – 94 years
|18th Aug 10am – 4pm||Overview of the workshop programme. Discussion of project material needs and ‘carbon saving’ measures. Create a foundation and ‘key’ for the cob.
We will use repurposed ‘urbancrete’ and cast off timber, using basic natural building methods.
|25th Aug 10am – 4pm||Create our first of many batches of cob using soil, sand and straw and our own shod feet. The first layer of the oven will be completed. we’ll build a ‘former’ for the oven opening.|
|1st Sept 10am – 4pm||The brick oven floor will be laid. We’ll build the sand dome to create the oven chamber and we’ll start to build up the sides and layers.|
|8th Sept 10am – 4pm||We’ll get ‘cobbing’ with 3 different cob ‘recipes’ and a lot of hard work! We’ll create the brick arch doorway and start the layer of natural insulation.|
|15th Sept 10am – 4pm||We’ll complete the oven! This involves more work with insulation and the outer layer of structural cob. And then we wait for nature to dry it out.|

The result of the workshop/group build will be a permanent “Community Oven” at the Croft.
